The rats live off the corpses of the dead men were fat and ugly and were

Chapter 7
1. How do Himmelstoss and the men reconcile?
Himmelstoss realizes that they all could die at the front. When he replaces the
cook, he gives the men extra rations and easy cookhouse duty.

behind the lines?
They don't want to remember how horrible it is up there when they don't have
too.

That is the only place that they can rest at all.
